Gap year
GAP YARRR, I couldn't recommend a gap year more. I honestly had the best time ever despite forever being bullied for taking one haha. But there really is a reason why some places are popular and I would definitely say all the places I visited were worth it (apart from Thailand - I'm sure some parts are beautiful but where I went was really fun but nothing special). Here's my gap year video PLEASE put it in 1080 as other wise you can't see the filming quality.
Here are the countries I went to so you can click on the links and find out about these:
Cambodia
Vietnam
Phillipines
Thailand
Bali
Sri Lanka
* I also went to Australia but stayed with family. My only advice for Bus is in Sydney only stay in Wake up hostel (trust me!) and in Melbourne stay in St Kilda not the city. Brisbane stay in Bunk and rent a car to do really cool hikes.
I went to New Zealand as well but did it on the kiwi experience bus so if you are travelling on your own 100% do that or hire a car and just copy the routes with a few of your own stops! https://www.kiwiexperience.com. NZ is honestly one of the most beautiful and dramatic landscapes I have ever seen so don't miss out! In River Valley the place you stay on Kiwi Experience have this thing where you can stay with them as a volunteer I thought it looked really cool when I was 18 but now I'm not sure if it was low key exploitation aha so think carefully. *
General recommendations:
- Ask but do not trust reception. Ask reception how much things should cost if they're trying to sell you something they will probably lie but if its not anything to do with them they will often tell the truth. A general rule is not to book things through your hostel as often the easiest way to book something is the worst and most expensive.
- If you are vegetarian/vegan download the app Happy Cow. (I'm not veggie or vegan but we found SO MANY places from this app that were incredible/ very local and not touristy that we never would of found otherwise).
- Bring a speaker, cards and a jumper.
- If you need to have an outbound ticket (if a country requires you to have already booked your flight out when you land) use bestonwardticket.com it costs around 10 pounds and it basically buys you a flight and then refunds it (not sure of the ins and outs look it up!).
Packing essentials:
- HAND SANITISER - Can't stress this enough
- Cards
- If you are going somewhere where you have to make your own food then bring tuperwear, oil, salt, pepper and a cool bag. (maybe some garlic and mixed herbs too).
- Travel pillow
- Eye mask
- Hot chocolate packets (if you are travelling on air Asia the flights can be FREEZING and you don't get a blanket/any food included so if you are on a tight budget hot chocolate could be your only way to warm up!
- Gum
