Cambodia

Cambodia is an incredible country and its beautiful beaches are SO UNDERRATED! The food is very average and very americanised all we ate was either typical American food (burgers, chips ect) or fried rice... We visited Siem reap, Phenom Pehn, Kampot, Sihanoukville (don't go here just use it as a passage way to get to the islands unless you are going for one of their renowned parties, once a month/every two weeks, they were called KERFUFFLE in 2018) and then the islands (Koh Rong, Koh Kong Samloem and Koh Ta Kiev).

Siem Reap - great city loved it. Nice way to ease yourself into Asian cities as it is much more chilled.

Where to stay:
Mad Monkey, White Rabbit, Funky Flashpackers (all have great reviews and had friends who went to all. We stayed at Mad Monkey. Mad monkey as a rule are always great around Asia so if they're reasonably priced I would always stay there).

What to eat:
Curry place opposite mad monkey (is apparently all I wrote so go explore!). For the record it actually is a very good curry place and was recommended from Lonely Planets South East Asia book.

What to do:
  • Angkor Wat (In 2018 prices were: For a sunrise - $20 a day for a tuk tuk. Definitely do sunrise purely because it gets so hot you won't want to walk round the temples past 12).
  • Pub street (Angkor Wat bar is good fun). We went during the water festival so we were mainly partying on the street (the water festival is so much fun it is like a constant water fight and at night it is so lively. However it lasted around 4 days so by the 3rd/4th you get a bit sick of not being able to go anywhere without being drenched in water).
  • Get a cheap massage!
Phenom Pehn - Kinda hated it, good to go just to educate yourself on the dark history of Cambodia but it is very depressing (Mostly because of the history).

Where to stay:
  • Mad Monkey
  • Billabongs
What to do:
  • S21 prison
  • Killing fields
  • Clubbing (heart of darkness/around that area is so fun!! Drag shows and very big and busy)
Kampot - Beautiful 'town?' on the river.

Where to stay:

To be honest I would only go for the hostel 'Arcadia' they have a 'water park' on the lake and loads of cool activities like boat trips, climbing and hikes! It's just a home away from home in a paradise like setting.

What to eat:

Apparently there is a really good ribs place (ask anyone westerner who works in Kampot and they will know) however I was with veggies so we didn't go.

Stuff to do:

  • Hike - it was $8 for a hike through Arcadia hostel
  • Have fun at the water park - Free for anyone staying at the hostel other wise there is an entry fee
  • Bokor hill national park - rent a moped and go up to this beautiful view point, INCREDIBLE VIEW!
Snoukville - just a transport port in my opinion. APART FROM THE EVENT KEFUFFLE. Considering you are a boat ride away from beautiful islands why would you stay in this area with below average beaches. You will probably need to stay here for at least a night due to the timing of boats.

Where to stay:
  • Boho is quite social and ok.
What to do:
  • KEFUFFLE - not sure if this event is running anymore but it was a well known party on Wednesday nights when we went (however it did get cancelled the Wednesday we went but other friends went a week later and said it was insane).

Koh ta Kiev - beautiful quieter island with only a couple of hostels/hotels.

Where to stay:
  • Cactus it was £7.5 a night and costed £ 6.5 for lunch and £ 7.5 for dinner (these prices may be in dollars). Although it is on the more expensive side the accommodation its self is beautiful. Where you eat dinner and lunch (the only place to get food) is decorated like a little beach hangout and you stay in kind of 'tree houses' so you are paying for a nice stay.
What to do:
  • Due to the lack of light pollution the plankton can be seen very clearly at night (research time of year)
  • Amazing sunsets
  • Beautiful beach (would be perfect for a travelling couple, it is a very romantic island)
  • It is kind of like a resort stay (but affordable for pack backers) so just relax!
  • HOWEVER 3 times a year they throw a MASSIVE beach party so look into that if you are interested/interested in avoiding it.
Koh Rong Samloem - STUNNING ISLAND, it is $5 to get from here to Koh Rong

Where to stay:
  • MAD MONKEY! - if going to this island you have to stay here, it is so social and absolutely beautiful. (if you are broke buy and hide your own booze as its on its own bay so you can only buy food and drink from there)
Stuff to do:
  • Clearwater (can ask the mad monkey staff to get you a water taxi for a cost of course) but it looks beautiful. (we didn't make it due to the weather but if I go back I'm 100% doing this!)

Koh Rong - Again stunning Island also much more lively.

Where to stay:
  • Higher backpacker end - NEST
  • Low end - Bongs (right on the port so have to walk a bit to get to the nice beaches)
  • Buanan bungalows - inconvenient location as you have to get a boat ride to the main part of the island however the beach it is on is GORGEOUS! But much less going on in that area.
Stuff to do:
  • Nestival (was on every Monday) - its a party thrown by the hostel Nest and is really fun.
  • Long beach (beaut)
  • Adventure Adams tour (I'm a big advocate of do it yourself so didn't do this but have heard good things)
  • Coconut beach (where Buanan bungalows is and is as I said GORGEOUS)
