Budapest
This post includes my opinions and experiences of: staying, going out, eating, things to do in Budapest and a paragraph on my stay. Enjoy 🙂
Price: In Budapest we spent an average of 18.89 Pounds (GB) per day.
Staying in Budapest:
We stayed in the home made hostel. It was really cheap (around 5 Pounds (GB) a night) and really sweet it felt like staying in a treehouse!. It also had a kitchen which is a massive plus when on a budge. It had lovely showers and dorms were nice enough however the 10 bed dorm has an 'upstairs' ledge where some of the beds are so i found myself on a kind of different floor to my friends even though they were just up an open ended staircase. Down sides was it wasn't particularly social (it says on the description that it is not a party hostel however you can still go out and come back at whatever time you please as long as you are respectful and it was very quiet in the evenings. It is like a home from home so if your looking for a homely place to stay this is perfect but if you want to go out there are dozens of party hostels in Budapest which look really fun.
Going out in Budapest:
1. Fogashaz (its huge but the room with the circus tent looking roof is the good bit.
2. Doboz
3. Simpla kert (this is a ruin bar and is defiantly a bar don't go here if you want to dance but use it as a warm up for Fogashaz if you want)
4. Go to Sziget (its a 7 day festival in summer and if your there you can buy a day ticket, DEFIANTLY worth it!).
What to do in Budapest:
1. go to fishermans basin/matthias church
2. Free walking tour (covered: chain bridge, climbed up castle hill to buda castle, st stephens basilica, matthias church and fishermans basin).
3. Margret island (can sunbath by the river, has a fountain show, has a workout playground thing on the side nearest the water fountain (under the bridge), has a running track around the island).
4. Baths!! Szechenyi baths are the most common and for good reason.
5. Heros square
6. See the shoes on the Danube
7. Parliament building (its sooo pretty!)
8. Watch the sunset from fishermans basin/the Danube (the sunsets here are incredible).
9. New york cafe (we didn't go as its quite expensive but it looks beautiful!)
Where to eat:
1. Buddha original (tastes good and cheap but not the nicest decor, 6.10 Pounds for a thai green curry with chicken and broccoli)
2. Kebab shops (theres thousands and they taste pretty good! Fast food cheap looking shops are good value and taste good)
3. Dolce fantasia gelato (0.56 pounds!! In the middle of nowhere though, we found it on our walk from heroes square to the dunube river).
4. Have dinner at the restaurant located right next to chain bridge on the parliament side of the river. (if walking from the parliament building to chain bridge its literally just before the bridge). The bridge lights up and its so pretty! (if your on a budget buy takeaway chips and a cheap beer and take advantage of the restaurant/bar/cafes outdoor seating by chain bridge.
My experience:
Budapest is my absolute favourite european city. Its just so pretty and has heaps to do! We also went to Sziget festival whilst we were there which was amazing and made my opinion on Buda even greater. It has a great night life and great day time activities and is really cheap so pretty much it the best you can get :)
Budget Interail trip:
We went interlining for almost 5 weeks (34 days). We visited Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Budapest, Slovenia, Venice, Rome, Cinque Terre and Interlarken. Over this period of time we spent 19.80 Pounds (GB) on average (excluding accommodation and transport). However on top of this average spending money we did also purchase a ticket to Sziget festival, a canyoning day trip and a white water rafting day trip. Some of these days we spent barely anything as we were on a train the majority of the day and one of these days i got food poisoning so spent 4 euros! Overall we were on a budget so did eat a lot of supermarket food however we could of been a lot stricter and saved a lot more money by eating out less (near the end of our holiday we looked for the cheapest places but still ate out a lot!)
